Angled Approach to a Fence at the Canter
Focus: Accuracy, Straightness, Confidence
Equipment: 2 jump poles, 2 jump standards, 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a single vertical. Place cones to mark an approach line that angles across the fence (not perpendicular).
- The angle should be mild — about 15-20 degrees off straight.
- Approach on the angled line at the canter. Keep the horse straight on YOUR line, not the fence's line.
- The horse should jump at an angle, landing on the same angled track on the other side.
- Your outside rein and leg keep the horse from drifting to jump the fence straight.
- Start with a small fence and mild angle. Gradually increase the angle as confidence builds.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse drifting to jump the fence straight instead of on the angled path.
- Not enough supporting outside aids, allowing the horse to run out or drift.
- The approach becoming crooked — the horse should be straight on your line.
- Jumping the fence at too sharp an angle, risking a run-out or stop.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice angled approaches from both sides of the fence.
- Set up two fences and practice an angled approach to one that leads to a straight approach on the other.
- Use angle fences as part of a course for jump-off practice.
Tip: Angled fences appear in every jump-off. Master them by starting with a small angle and building up gradually.
