Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up poles in an L-shape on the ground, creating a corridor about 4 feet wide.
  2. Lead your horse forward through the L-shape to show it the path.
  3. Now position the horse at the end of the L. Ask it to back up through the corridor.
  4. The horse must turn its body while backing to navigate the L-turn.
  5. Guide with the lead rope: apply pressure to the appropriate side to steer the hindquarters through the turn.
  6. This is a common trail class pattern and an excellent body-awareness exercise.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The horse stepping on or over the poles instead of staying within the corridor.
  • Not providing enough guidance at the L-turn, causing the horse to get stuck.
  • Rushing the backing — this requires patience and step-by-step cueing.
  • The corridor being too narrow for the horse to turn comfortably.

Variations & Progressions

  • Make the corridor narrower (3 feet) for precision training.
  • Progress to backing the L-shape under saddle.
  • Add a U-turn for an even more challenging backing pattern.
Tip: Backing through an L-shape teaches your horse to think about where all four feet are. This body awareness is invaluable for any discipline.
