Backing Up from the Ground at the Collected Trot
Focus: Respect, Obedience, Collection
Equipment: Halter and leadrope
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Stand facing your horse's chest. Hold the lead rope about 18 inches from the clip.
- Apply light backward pressure on the lead rope while saying 'back.' Wiggle the rope if needed.
- The moment the horse takes one step backward, release all pressure immediately. Praise.
- Ask for another step. Release and praise. Build to 3-4 steps in a row.
- The horse should step backward in diagonal pairs (like the rein-back under saddle).
- Practice until the horse backs from a light verbal command with minimal rope pressure.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pulling continuously on the rope instead of using pressure-and-release.
- Not releasing quickly enough when the horse responds, so it doesn't understand the reward.
- Asking for too many steps at once before the horse understands the exercise.
- Standing too close to the horse's front feet while asking for backing.
Variations & Progressions
- Back your horse through an L-shape or around a cone for steering while backing.
- Back uphill for strength building.
- Use backing as a correction tool: horse walks ahead of you? Back it up 5 steps.
Tip: Backing builds respect because it asks the horse to yield space to you. A horse that backs readily respects your space.
