Arena diagram for Basic Leading at the Walk

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Stand at your horse's left shoulder, facing forward. Hold the lead rope about 12 inches from the clip in your right hand.
  2. Walk forward with purpose. Your horse should walk beside you, matching your pace without pulling ahead or lagging behind.
  3. If the horse pulls ahead, give a firm tug-and-release on the lead rope and say 'whoa.' When it returns to position, praise and continue.
  4. If the horse lags behind, use a verbal cluck and swing the tail end of the lead rope beside your hip as encouragement.
  5. Practice stopping: halt your feet and say 'whoa.' The horse should stop within one step of your halt.
  6. Walk and halt 10-15 times around the arena. The horse should become sharper with each repetition.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Walking too slowly, allowing the horse to creep ahead without correction.
  • Continuously pulling on the lead rope instead of using tug-and-release corrections.
  • Not rewarding good behavior — the horse needs to know when it's doing the right thing.
  • Standing too far ahead of the horse, which puts you in a dangerous position if it spooks.

Variations & Progressions

  • Practice leading from the right side for equal training.
  • Add trot transitions to test responsiveness at a faster gait.
  • Lead through an obstacle course for added challenge.
Tip: Your position matters: stand at the horse's shoulder, not in front of it. Leading from in front invites the horse to slow down or pull away.
