Belly Lift Exercise
Focus: Core Strength, Engagement, Recovery
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Stand at your horse's side, near the girth area.
- Run your fingertips firmly along the horse's belly, just behind the girth area, from one side to the other.
- The horse should reflexively lift its belly upward, engaging the abdominal muscles.
- Hold the pressure for 3-5 seconds while the belly is lifted.
- Release and repeat 5-8 times.
- This activates the core muscles that support the horse's back under saddle.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using too little pressure — you need firm fingertips, not a gentle tickle.
- The horse moving away from the pressure instead of lifting. Try a slightly different spot.
- Not holding the lift long enough for it to be a strengthening exercise.
- Doing it on a cold horse before warm-up.
Variations & Progressions
- Combine with withers wiggles (apply pressure to the withers to encourage the back to round).
- Do belly lifts before and after rides as part of a core routine.
- Use belly lifts as part of a rehabilitation program for horses with weak backs.
Tip: Belly lifts are physiotherapy for horses. They activate the exact muscles needed to carry a rider comfortably.
