Bounce to Bending Line at the Sitting Trot
Focus: Technique, Agility, Track Planning
Equipment: 6 jump poles, 6 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a bounce (2 fences 10 feet apart), then a single fence on a bending line 60 feet from the bounce exit.
- Sitting Trot into the bounce. The bounce develops quick reflexes and front leg technique.
- After the bounce, sitting trot on a bending line to the single fence in 4-5 strides.
- The bending line requires you to establish a track and maintain rhythm immediately after the demanding bounce.
- Practice the bending line to both left and right turns.
- This combination tests both gymnastic ability and course-riding skill in one exercise.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Losing balance in the bounce and not recovering in time for the bending line.
- Not planning the bending line turn early enough — decide your direction before the bounce.
- The canter after the bounce being too fast or unbalanced for the bending line.
- Cutting the bending line too tight and arriving at the third fence too close.
Variations & Progressions
- Change the bending line distance to 48 feet (3 strides direct, 4 strides bending).
- Add a fourth fence after the bending line for a mini-course.
- Replace the bounce with a one-stride gymnastic for a different entry.
Tip: This exercise bridges the gap between gymnastic training and course riding. It teaches you to think quickly after a demanding effort.
