Canter Circle with Walk Transitions
Focus: Transitions, Balance, Engagement
Equipment: 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a 20-meter circle. Begin at the working walk on the correct lead.
- At the first quarter-point cone, transition to walk for 4-6 strides.
- At the next quarter-point, pick up the walk again. The transition should be prompt and on the correct lead.
- Continue this pattern: walk three-quarters, walk one-quarter, around the circle.
- After 3 repetitions, reverse the ratio: walk three-quarters and walk only one-quarter of the circle.
- The walk-to-walk transitions on a circle test your horse's responsiveness and balance.
- Finish with a full circle of balanced walk, then walk and stretch.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Picking up the wrong lead after the trot interlude.
- The trot section becoming rushed as the horse anticipates the canter depart.
- Losing the circle shape during transitions.
- The canter becoming flat and running after multiple transitions.
Variations & Progressions
- Use walk transitions instead of trot for a more advanced collection exercise.
- Reduce to 2-3 trot strides between canter segments for sharper transitions.
- Perform on a 15-meter circle to increase the balance demand.
Tip: If the horse picks up the wrong lead, calmly trot and try again. Don't punish, just redirect.
