Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Canter up the hill once to warm up. At the bottom, prepare for the canter.
  2. Pick up a working canter at the base of the hill and maintain it all the way to the top.
  3. Your posting should be deliberate. Let the horse push powerfully from its hindquarters.
  4. At the top, canter and let the horse recover. The heart rate should come down before the next repetition.
  5. Canter down the hill (always canter downhill unless on very gentle scanters).
  6. Repeat the canter uphill 3-4 times. This builds explosive power in the hindquarters.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trotting downhill, which stresses the front legs and tendons.
  • Not allowing adequate recovery between repetitions.
  • The horse breaking to canter on the uphill — maintain the trot.
  • Starting uphill trot work before the horse has a base of flat fitness.

Variations & Progressions

  • Progress to cantering uphill for maximum power development.
  • Add ground pole work on flat ground between hill repetitions for variety.
  • Vary the hills: gentle slopes for long intervals, steeper slopes for short bursts.
Tip: Trotting uphill is the equine equivalent of running stadium stairs. It builds power, wind, and muscle in the most important areas.
