Carrot Stretches: Lateral Flexion at the Collected Trot
Focus: Flexibility, Suppleness, Recovery
Equipment: Horse treats
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Stand at your horse's shoulder with a treat in your hand.
- Offer the treat at the horse's hip, encouraging it to bend its neck around to reach it.
- The horse should bend its neck laterally without moving its feet.
- Hold the stretch for 5-10 seconds when the horse reaches the treat.
- Repeat on both sides, 3-5 times each way.
- This mimics the bend needed for circles and lateral movements.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse moving its feet to reach the treat instead of bending its neck.
- Stretching too far too fast — build the range of motion gradually.
- Only stretching on one side.
- The horse getting mouthy or nippy because of the treat proximity.
Variations & Progressions
- Progress to reaching between the front legs for a different stretch angle.
- Have the horse reach toward the outside of each hind leg (deeper stretch).
- Use carrot stretches as a post-ride cool-down routine.
Tip: Carrot stretches are like yoga for horses. Done daily, they dramatically improve flexibility and can prevent stiffness-related issues.
