Center Line Riding at the Canter
Focus: Straightness, Accuracy, Precision
Equipment: Letter markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At A, turn onto the center line heading toward C. Look straight ahead at C to guide your line.
- Your horse should be absolutely straight on the center line. Use both legs evenly to prevent drift.
- Check your straightness by glancing down at the line in the footing (if visible) or at the arena walls to ensure equal distance on both sides.
- Ride the full center line at the canter. At C, turn left or right onto the track.
- Repeat at the canter. Straightness becomes harder at faster gaits because any imbalance is magnified.
- Practice the center line 4-6 times. This is a fundamental skill for every dressage test entry.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Drifting to one side because the horse favors one shoulder over the other.
- Looking down at the horse's neck instead of ahead at C.
- The initial turn onto the center line being too shallow or too deep.
- Losing straightness in the last 3-4 strides before C because the horse anticipates the turn.
Variations & Progressions
- Add a halt at X for a halt-salute test preparation exercise.
- Ride the center line in medium trot for added difficulty.
- Practice the center line at the canter with a specific lead for test preparation.
Tip: The center line reveals the truth about your horse's straightness. Film it from C and you'll see every drift and wobble.
