Circle Transitions: Walk-Trot-Walk
Focus: Transitions, Rhythm, Balance
Equipment: 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a 20-meter circle with cone markers at the quarter points.
- Begin at the walk. As you pass the first cone, prepare to trot. At the second cone, pick up a working trot.
- Trot for half the circle (from cone 2 to cone 4). At cone 4, prepare to walk. Transition to walk by cone 1.
- Walk for half the circle, then trot again for the next half. This creates a rhythmic pattern.
- Focus on making each transition smooth: the horse should flow from one gait to the next without jarring.
- After 4-5 repetitions, change the pattern: trot for one quarter, walk for one quarter, alternating around the circle.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The transitions being abrupt instead of smooth and flowing.
- The horse breaking into trot before the designated cone or walking too late.
- Losing the circle shape during transitions as the horse falls in or drifts out.
- The rider throwing their body forward during the trot transition.
Variations & Progressions
- Add canter transitions: walk-trot-canter-trot-walk around the circle.
- Reduce the transition zones to specific cones (immediate transitions at the cone).
- Perform the exercise on a 15-meter circle for more difficulty.
Tip: Prepare your transitions 3-4 strides before the cone. The preparation is more important than the exact moment.
