Clipping Preparation: Handling Sensitive Areas
Focus: Desensitization, Patience, Grooming Prep
Equipment: Electric clippers or buzzing device, Halter and leadrope
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Turn on the clippers and hold them at your side, 10 feet from the horse. Let it hear the buzz.
- Slowly approach the horse with the running clippers. Stop when the horse shows any tension.
- When the horse relaxes (lowers head, licks, sighs), take one more step closer. Repeat.
- Touch the horse's shoulder with the non-blade side of the running clippers. The vibration is the key challenge.
- Work along the neck and body with the vibrating clippers (turned around, not cutting).
- Only use the blade side when the horse is completely calm with the vibration everywhere.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing to clip before the horse is comfortable with the sound and vibration.
- Starting with sensitive areas (ears, muzzle) instead of the shoulder/neck.
- Restraining the horse instead of allowing it to accept the clippers voluntarily.
- Trying to complete the full clip in one session when the horse needs multiple sessions to adjust.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice with battery-operated clippers (quieter) before full-size clippers.
- Combine with other desensitization exercises for a multi-sensory session.
- Run a cordless toothbrush along the horse's face as a gentle introduction to vibration.
Tip: Clipping doesn't have to be a rodeo. Patience in the preparation stage creates a horse that stands quietly for every clip.
