Collected Walk Development
Focus: Collection, Engagement, Rhythm
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start at a free walk on a long rein. Allow the horse to stretch and swing through the back.
- Gradually take up the reins to a medium walk. The steps should shorten slightly but maintain energy.
- Now ask for collected walk: half-halt with your seat and outside rein, asking the horse to shorten the stride further.
- In collected walk, the horse should step higher and shorter, with clear four-beat rhythm maintained.
- The hind legs should step under the horse's body, not trailing behind.
- Maintain collected walk for 10-15 strides, then return to medium walk.
- Repeat 3-4 times. Collected walk is demanding — don't overdo it.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The walk losing its four-beat rhythm and becoming lateral (pacing).
- The horse becoming tight and tense, shortening the stride by restriction rather than collection.
- Over-collecting until the horse almost halts.
- Not releasing back to medium walk soon enough, causing frustration.
Variations & Progressions
- Use collected walk as preparation for walk pirouettes.
- Alternate collected and extended walk every 10 strides.
- Perform collected walk on a 10-meter circle to combine collection with bend.
Tip: The walk is the most easily ruined gait. If the four-beat rhythm is compromised, immediately return to free walk.
