Arena diagram for Competition Speed Run

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. This is a full-speed run simulating competition conditions. Only attempt after mastering the pattern at slower speeds.
  2. Set up a timer at the start/finish line. Review your pattern plan before you begin.
  3. Run in at speed. Rate before the first barrel and execute your turn. Explode out toward barrel 2.
  4. Cross to barrel 2 on the straightest possible line. Rate, turn, and explode out.
  5. Ride to the third barrel. This is often the longest run. Rate, turn, and run home.
  6. The finish line sprint should be straight and aggressive — don't slow down until past the timer.
  7. Review your time and identify which barrel cost you the most time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running too many speed runs in one session — 2-3 maximum.
  • Sacrificing turn quality for speed.
  • Not warming up properly before speed work.
  • Running the same pattern at speed every training session, causing the horse to anticipate and get hot.

Variations & Progressions

  • Run the pattern in reverse for a training variation.
  • Time individual barrel turns to identify your weakest barrel.
  • Practice the run-in and run-home portions separately for speed work.
Tip: Competition speed runs should be rare in training — maybe once every 2 weeks. The rest of the time, practice turns, rate, and positioning.
