Competition Speed Run
Focus: Speed, Accuracy, Competition Prep
Equipment: 3 barrels, Timer, Splint boots, Bell boots
Step-by-Step Instructions
- This is a full-speed run simulating competition conditions. Only attempt after mastering the pattern at slower speeds.
- Set up a timer at the start/finish line. Review your pattern plan before you begin.
- Run in at speed. Rate before the first barrel and execute your turn. Explode out toward barrel 2.
- Cross to barrel 2 on the straightest possible line. Rate, turn, and explode out.
- Ride to the third barrel. This is often the longest run. Rate, turn, and run home.
- The finish line sprint should be straight and aggressive — don't slow down until past the timer.
- Review your time and identify which barrel cost you the most time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running too many speed runs in one session — 2-3 maximum.
- Sacrificing turn quality for speed.
- Not warming up properly before speed work.
- Running the same pattern at speed every training session, causing the horse to anticipate and get hot.
Variations & Progressions
- Run the pattern in reverse for a training variation.
- Time individual barrel turns to identify your weakest barrel.
- Practice the run-in and run-home portions separately for speed work.
Tip: Competition speed runs should be rare in training — maybe once every 2 weeks. The rest of the time, practice turns, rate, and positioning.
