Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. This exercise tests your horse's current fitness level. Perform it monthly to track improvement.
  2. Walk for 5 minutes to warm up. Note the horse's resting respiratory rate.
  3. Trot for 5 continuous minutes. Note any change in breathing or desire to break gait.
  4. Walk for 2 minutes recovery. Check respiratory rate.
  5. Canter for 3 continuous minutes. Note the quality of the canter at the end versus the beginning.
  6. Walk for 5 minutes cool-down. The horse's respiratory rate should return to near-resting within 10 minutes.
  7. Record results: time to recover, gait quality at the end of each phase, willingness to continue.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Pushing a horse that's clearly struggling to complete the trotting or cantering phase.
  • Not recording results, so you can't track improvement over time.
  • Performing the test on an extremely hot or humid day when conditions affect results.
  • Not warming up before beginning the test phases.

Variations & Progressions

  • Increase the trot phase to 10 minutes as fitness improves.
  • Add a canter-trot interval phase for advanced fitness testing.
  • Perform the test on different terrain (flat, hills) for a thorough assessment.
Tip: What gets measured gets improved. Monthly fitness testing gives you concrete data on your conditioning program's effectiveness.
