Cool-Down Walk Routine at the Walk
Focus: Cool-down, Recovery, Relaxation
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- After any workout, walk for a minimum of 10 minutes to cool the horse down.
- Allow a completely loose rein. The horse should stretch its neck down and out.
- Walk the entire arena perimeter at a relaxed pace.
- The horse's breathing should return to normal within the first 5 minutes.
- Check the horse for sweat patterns — even sweat indicates equal work on both sides.
- The cool-down walk is also your opportunity to mentally review the session.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Stopping work and immediately untacking without a cool-down.
- Keeping the horse on a tight rein during the cool-down, preventing relaxation.
- Cool-down being too short (under 5 minutes).
- Dismounting and hand-walking only — mounted cool-down is important for the horse's back.
Variations & Progressions
- Add gentle stretches (carrot stretches) after dismounting.
- Cool down on the trail or in an open area for variety.
- Include a few minutes of free walk on a long rein before coming to a halt.
Tip: The cool-down is as important as the workout. A proper cool-down reduces muscle soreness and helps the horse process the lesson.
