Establish a balanced right-lead trot on the track.
Ride a shallow serpentine along the long side, maintaining the right lead throughout.
The loop should take you 5 meters off the track and back. You will be in counter-trot on the inward portion.
Maintain a slight right flexion even when curving left. The horse must hold the lead from your aids, not the direction.
Ride 3-4 shallow loops along the long side, then straighten and trot.
Change leads and repeat the counter-trot serpentine on the left lead.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The horse swapping leads during the counter-canter portions.
The loops becoming too deep, making the counter-canter unstable.
Losing the three-beat rhythm in the counter-canter sections.
The rider gripping and becoming tense, transferring anxiety to the horse.
Variations & Progressions
Deepen the loops to 10 meters off the track for more demanding counter-canter.
Add flying changes at the peak of each loop for upper-level work.
Ride the serpentine in true canter, then immediately repeat in counter-canter for comparison.
Tip: Counter-canter serpentines build the straightness and balance needed for flying changes. The horse learns to hold the lead until you say otherwise.
