Counting Strides Between Letters
Focus: Rhythm, Awareness, Adjustability
Equipment: Letter markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the working trot, count the number of strides from one letter to the next along the long side.
- Ride the long side and count: H to E might be 12 strides, for example.
- Now ride the same long side and try to fit exactly 12 strides again. Same rhythm, same stride length.
- Change it: try to fit 14 strides (shorter, more collected) or 10 strides (longer, more extended).
- Ride back and forth, changing the stride count target each time.
- This exercise teaches you to feel and control stride length, which is essential for jumping and dressage.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Losing count because the rider stops focusing mid-way.
- Changing the tempo instead of the stride length to hit the count.
- Only being able to lengthen but not shorten (or vice versa).
- Counting every stride of the posting trot instead of every other one (posting trot has two phases per stride).
Variations & Progressions
- Count strides on a diagonal and adjust: lengthen or shorten to hit a target number.
- Apply the counting exercise at the canter for jumping preparation.
- Count strides in a combination: letter A to B = 12, letter B to C = 14 (different stride lengths).
Tip: This skill directly transfers to jumping distances. If you can adjust flatwork strides on demand, you can ride any distance to a fence.
