Creek Bed Riding at the Collected Trot
Focus: Confidence, Balance, Terrain
Equipment: Access to creek or ditch
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Find a shallow creek or drainage ditch with a sandy or rocky bottom.
- Approach at the collected collected trot on a loose rein. Let the horse see and hear the water.
- If the horse wants to lower its head to investigate, allow it. This builds confidence.
- Step into the water and collected collected trot along the creek bed for 30-50 feet if safe.
- The uneven, rocky footing teaches the horse to watch its feet and balance carefully.
- Exit the creek calmly. Collected Collected Trot on solid ground for 5 minutes, then cross the creek again.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forcing the horse into rushing water (start with still or slowly moving water).
- Not checking the creek bottom for hazards before riding through.
- Riding through water deeper than the horse's knees without knowing the bottom.
- Punishing the horse for pawing at the water (this is natural investigation behavior).
Variations & Progressions
- Progress to trotting through shallow water for a more confident challenge.
- Practice creek crossings on trail rides for real-world application.
- Ride in different water sources for variety: puddles, ponds, streams.
Tip: Water confidence is built through positive experiences. Never force a water crossing — patience now creates a water-loving trail horse later.
