Cross-Rail Introduction
Focus: Confidence, Technique, Balance
Equipment: 2 jump poles, 2 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a small cross-rail at 12 inches at the center (the lowest point).
- Approach at the trot. Look over the fence, not at it.
- The X shape of the cross-rail guides the horse to the center of the jump.
- Keep your leg on all the way to the fence. Allow your hands to follow the horse's neck forward over the jump.
- Land and continue in a straight line for 6-8 strides before turning.
- Repeat 4-6 times. Cross-rails build confidence because the horse can see exactly where to jump.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pulling on the reins in the last stride, discouraging the horse from jumping.
- Leaning forward before the horse takes off, getting ahead of the motion.
- Not keeping enough leg, allowing the horse to stop or run out.
- Looking down at the cross-rail instead of over it.
Variations & Progressions
- Approach from the canter for a different feel.
- Add a ground pole 9 feet before the cross-rail as a placing pole.
- Progress to a small vertical (straight rail at 18 inches) once confident.
Tip: Cross-rails are the safest first fence. The X shape invites the horse to the center and makes the jump feel small.
