Arena diagram for Diagonal Line with Rollback at the Collected Trot

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up a 3-stride line on the diagonal. Jump fence 1, ride 3 strides to fence 2.
  2. After fence 2, ride a rollback turn and come back to fence 1 from the opposite direction.
  3. The rollback should be a smooth half-circle, maintaining the collected trot throughout.
  4. After jumping fence 1 again, ride the 3-stride line back to fence 2.
  5. Continue the pattern: line, rollback, line, rollback.
  6. This builds agility and sharpens the horse's responsiveness to turns.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The rollback turn being too wide, wasting time and losing impulsion.
  • Not looking back at the fence early enough during the rollback.
  • The horse losing its lead during the rollback turn.
  • Arriving at the first fence unbalanced after the rollback.

Variations & Progressions

  • Tighten the rollback each time for a time-trial simulation.
  • Add a third fence offset from the line for a longer course pattern.
  • Change the line distance from 3 to 4 strides for a different challenge.
Tip: This exercise simulates jump-off riding where tight turns and efficient lines save time.
