Diagonal Line with Rollback at the Trot
Focus: Track Planning, Agility, Adjustability
Equipment: 4 jump poles, 4 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up a 3-stride line on the diagonal. Jump fence 1, ride 3 strides to fence 2.
- After fence 2, ride a rollback turn and come back to fence 1 from the opposite direction.
- The rollback should be a smooth half-circle, maintaining the trot throughout.
- After jumping fence 1 again, ride the 3-stride line back to fence 2.
- Continue the pattern: line, rollback, line, rollback.
- This builds agility and sharpens the horse's responsiveness to turns.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The rollback turn being too wide, wasting time and losing impulsion.
- Not looking back at the fence early enough during the rollback.
- The horse losing its lead during the rollback turn.
- Arriving at the first fence unbalanced after the rollback.
Variations & Progressions
- Tighten the rollback each time for a time-trial simulation.
- Add a third fence offset from the line for a longer course pattern.
- Change the line distance from 3 to 4 strides for a different challenge.
Tip: This exercise simulates jump-off riding where tight turns and efficient lines save time.
