Diamond Pattern at the Canter
Focus: Accuracy, Transitions, Straightness
Equipment: 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up four cones at the midpoints of each arena side: A, B, C, and E (or equivalent points).
- Starting at A, ride a straight line to B. Turn 90 degrees and ride straight to C.
- Turn 90 degrees at C and ride straight to E. Turn again and ride straight back to A.
- This creates a diamond shape in the arena. Each straight segment should be truly straight.
- The 90-degree turns test your horse's response to your aids. Prepare each turn 3-4 strides in advance.
- Ride the diamond at the canter first, then progress to the canter. At the canter, the turns become half-halts.
- Reverse direction and ride the diamond the other way to work both reins equally.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The straight segments curving instead of being laser-straight.
- Over-shooting or under-shooting the 90-degree turns at each cone.
- Losing impulsion during the turns because of over-use of the reins.
- The horse anticipating turns and cutting corners before reaching the cone.
Variations & Progressions
- Ride the diamond at the canter with simple changes at each turn point.
- Add a halt at each cone, stand for 3 seconds, then proceed to the next point.
- Make a smaller diamond using cones placed closer to the center for tighter turns.
Tip: Prepare your turns like a car approaching a corner: slow the body first, then turn the steering.
