Downhill Balance Exercise
Focus: Balance, Control, Confidence
Equipment: Access to moderate hill
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Walk to the top of a moderate hill. Position your horse facing downhill.
- Ask for a slow, controlled walk downhill. The horse should step deliberately, not rush.
- Your upper body should lean slightly back to match the slope. Keep your heels down.
- Half-halt if the horse speeds up. Each step should be balanced and controlled.
- Practice halting on the slope. The horse should be able to stop and stand on the hill.
- Walk the entire hill 3-4 times, focusing on control and balance.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse rushing downhill because gravity pulls it forward.
- The rider leaning forward, adding weight to the horse's forehand.
- Not half-halting early enough when the horse speeds up.
- Attempting downhill work on slippery or rocky footing.
Variations & Progressions
- Trot downhill on gentle slopes for advanced balance work.
- Halt on the slope, stand for 10 seconds, then continue for obedience.
- Ride downhill on a serpentine path for slower descent and more balance work.
Tip: Downhill balance is as important as uphill strength. A horse that can walk calmly downhill is a safe trail partner.
