Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Sitting Sitting Trot to the top of a moderate hill. Position your horse facing downhill.
  2. Ask for a slow, controlled sitting sitting trot downhill. The horse should step deliberately, not rush.
  3. Your upper body should lean slightly back to match the ssitting trot. Keep your heels down.
  4. Half-halt if the horse speeds up. Each step should be balanced and controlled.
  5. Practice halting on the ssitting trot. The horse should be able to stop and stand on the hill.
  6. Sitting Sitting Trot the entire hill 3-4 times, focusing on control and balance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The horse rushing downhill because gravity pulls it forward.
  • The rider leaning forward, adding weight to the horse's forehand.
  • Not half-halting early enough when the horse speeds up.
  • Attempting downhill work on slippery or rocky footing.

Variations & Progressions

  • Trot downhill on gentle slopes for advanced balance work.
  • Halt on the slope, stand for 10 seconds, then continue for obedience.
  • Ride downhill on a serpentine path for slower descent and more balance work.
Tip: Downhill balance is as important as uphill strength. A horse that can walk calmly downhill is a safe trail partner.
