Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Ride in the arena during dusk or dawn when light is changing.
  2. Notice how your horse reacts to shadows, shifting light, and reduced visibility.
  3. Ride simple patterns: large circles, straight lines. Keep the horse's confidence up with steady aids.
  4. The horse may spook at familiar objects that look different in low light. Stay calm and redirect.
  5. Practice halts in shadowy areas where the horse might be nervous.
  6. This prepares your horse for trail rides that run late or start early.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Riding in truly dark conditions without proper lighting or reflective gear.
  • Not wearing a reflective vest in low-light conditions (safety first).
  • Punishing the horse for spooking at shadows — it's genuinely seeing something different.
  • Riding in unfamiliar terrain in low light — stick to familiar areas.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add a flashlight to your pocket and practice turning it on/off while riding.
  • Ride past reflective markers that catch light differently than expected.
  • Practice low-light rides regularly so the horse is comfortable with changing light.
Tip: Horses see differently than humans in low light. What looks normal to you may be a dark shadow-monster to your horse. Be patient.
