Arena diagram for Extended Canter Development

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start at a medium canter with a steady contact. The horse should be marching purposefully.
  2. Gradually lengthen the reins, encouraging the horse to stretch its neck forward and down.
  3. As the horse stretches, the canter strides should naturally lengthen. Allow this to happen.
  4. The extended canter should cover maximum ground with each stride. The hind feet should overstep the front feet prints.
  5. Maintain the four-beat canter rhythm. The extension should be in stride length, not speed.
  6. Canter for 2-3 minutes in the extended canter, then gradually collect back to medium canter.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing extended walk with a fast walk — the tempo should stay the same.
  • Not allowing enough rein for the horse to truly stretch and extend.
  • The walk losing its four-beat rhythm and becoming lateral (pacing).
  • Pulling the reins back too quickly when collecting from extended to medium.

Variations & Progressions

  • Practice extended walk on the diagonal across the arena.
  • Compare the horse's overstep in medium walk vs. extended walk to measure improvement.
  • Use extended walk as a reward between demanding exercises.
Tip: The extended walk is one of the highest-scored movements in dressage because it reveals the horse's natural scope. You can't fake a good walk.
