Five-Stride Line
Focus: Stride Control, Rhythm, Accuracy
Equipment: 4 jump poles, 4 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up 2 fences 72 feet apart (five normal canter strides).
- Approach at the working canter. After the first fence, count: 1-2-3-4-5.
- You should arrive at the second fence in a comfortable distance on stride 5.
- If you get 6 strides, your canter needs more forward energy. If you get 4, collect slightly.
- Once you can reliably get 5 strides, try 6 (collected) and 4 (open).
- The ability to ride the same line in different stride counts is the mark of a skilled rider.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Losing count and guessing at the second fence.
- Pulling to add the extra stride instead of using your seat to collect.
- Running to leave out a stride, arriving dangerously close to the second fence.
- Not maintaining a consistent path between the fences.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice both 4 and 6 strides in the same session for adjustability contrast.
- Set up two five-stride lines at different angles for a mini-course.
- Time yourself to see which stride count is fastest (hint: fewer strides, straight track).
Tip: Five strides is a common show jumping distance. Know your horse's normal stride and you can add or leave out with confidence.
