Four-Fence Mini Course
Focus: Track Planning, Rhythm, Confidence
Equipment: 8 jump poles, 8 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up 4 small fences in a pattern that requires turns and changes of direction.
- Walk the course on foot first: plan your track, count your strides between fences, identify your lead changes.
- Start with fence 1. After landing, plan your turn to fence 2. Focus on a balanced approach.
- After fence 2, adjust your canter for the distance to fence 3. Look ahead to plan your track.
- Fence 3 to fence 4 completes the course. Finish with a controlled canter after the last fence.
- Debrief: were your distances right? Were your turns smooth? Were your leads correct?
- Repeat the course 2-3 times, improving each element with every pass.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not walking the course on foot before riding it.
- Getting lost mid-course because you didn't memorize the pattern.
- Rushing between fences instead of re-establishing rhythm.
- Only focusing on the current fence instead of planning 2 fences ahead.
Variations & Progressions
- Raise the fences for confidence building at height.
- Add a fifth and sixth fence for a more complex course.
- Time the course and try to ride it more efficiently (not faster, but smoother).
Tip: Always think two fences ahead. While you're jumping fence 1, you should already be planning fence 2 and looking toward fence 3.
