Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Divide the arena into four equal sections using cones along the center line.
  2. Begin at A and ride the first loop to the right, reaching the track at K-E.
  3. Cross the center line with 2 straight strides, then bend left for loop two, reaching the track at E-H.
  4. Continue for all four loops, ensuring each is identical in depth and reaches the track.
  5. The narrower loops (compared to 3-loop) demand quicker changes of bend and more lateral suppleness.
  6. At the trot, focus on maintaining rhythm. The horse should not speed up or slow down at the direction changes.
  7. Ride 3 complete passes, then walk on a long rein to reward your horse.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Making the loops too shallow because of the narrower space.
  • The horse anticipating direction changes and cutting the loops short.
  • Inconsistent bend, with more bend in one direction than the other.
  • The rider's body getting behind the horse's motion at each bend change.

Variations & Progressions

  • Progress to a 5-loop serpentine for even tighter curves.
  • Ride the serpentine at the canter in counter-canter through the short loops.
  • Add 10-meter circles at the top of each loop before crossing back.
Tip: Use the center line cones as your guide. Each loop should be geometrically equal — measure with your eye before you start.
