Groundwork
Intermediate
15 min
Ground-Tying Practice
Focus: Obedience, Patience, Independence
Equipment: Halter and leadrope
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start with your horse tied normally. Untie the rope and drop it on the ground.
- Step 2 feet away from the horse. If it stands still for 5 seconds, step back and praise.
- Gradually increase the distance: 5 feet, 10 feet, 15 feet.
- If the horse moves, calmly return it to the exact spot and start over.
- Build up the duration: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes at 15+ feet away.
- The horse should learn that a dropped rope means 'stand here and don't move.'
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting with too much distance or duration.
- Getting angry when the horse moves — calmly return it every time.
- Practicing in a distracting environment before the horse is solid in a quiet one.
- Not returning the horse to the exact same spot, which muddies the expectation.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice ground-tying during grooming (set the rope down while brushing).
- Ground-tie while you walk to the tack room and back.
- Ground-tie in progressively more challenging environments (near other horses, near the gate).
Tip: Ground-tying is the ultimate patience exercise. A horse that ground-ties has the mental discipline for advanced training.
