Half-10-Meter Circle to Change Direction
Focus: Bend, Accuracy, Transitions
Equipment: 2 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the working trot, tracking right, begin a half-circle of 10 meters off the track at E or B.
- The half-circle brings you to the center line, facing the opposite direction.
- Ride 3-4 strides on the center line, perfectly straight, to establish the new direction.
- Then ride a half-circle back to the track on the new rein (now tracking left).
- The two half-circles create a smooth S-shaped direction change through the center of the arena.
- Practice this movement 4-6 times, alternating the starting side.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The half-circles not being symmetrical — one larger than the other.
- Not straightening on the center line between the two half-circles.
- The horse falling in on the second half-circle because the new bend isn't established.
- Losing rhythm during the direction change.
Variations & Progressions
- Use 8-meter half-circles for a more collected version.
- Perform the direction change at the canter with a simple change on the center line.
- Add a transition on the center line: trot-walk-trot between the half-circles.
Tip: This is a standard dressage test movement. The quality depends on equal-sized half-circles and a straight center line section.
