Half-Circle and Return to Track
Focus: Bend, Transitions, Accuracy
Equipment: 2 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Starting from the track, ride a half-circle of 10 meters into the arena, then ride a diagonal line back to the track.
- Begin at a letter on the long side (like E or B). Turn off the track and ride the half-circle.
- At the point farthest from the track, you should be 10 meters from the rail.
- Now ride a straight diagonal line back to the track, arriving several meters ahead of where you started.
- The diagonal portion should be ridden straight with the horse slightly positioned to the outside to prepare for the new bend on the track.
- Practice this movement in both directions. Pay attention to the transition from curved to straight line.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Making the half-circle too shallow, never truly reaching 10 meters from the track.
- Losing the bend during the half-circle and cutting corners.
- Not straightening the horse on the diagonal return line.
- Arriving back at the track at an awkward angle instead of smoothly merging.
Variations & Progressions
- Increase to a 15-meter half-circle for a shallower return angle.
- Perform the exercise at the canter, including a lead change if crossing the center.
- Add a transition to walk at the farthest point of the half-circle, then trot the return.
Tip: This movement appears in many dressage tests. Practice it until the half-circle and return feel like one flowing movement.
