Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start on the center line at the collected collected trot. Half-pass to the right, moving diagonally toward the right track.
  2. After reaching the quarter line, straighten for 2-3 strides, then change the bend and half-pass to the left.
  3. Continue the zigzag: half-pass right to the quarter line, straighten, half-pass left to the opposite quarter line.
  4. Each half-pass segment should cover equal distance both forward and sideways.
  5. The changes of bend should happen in the 2-3 straight strides. The horse must be supple enough to switch quickly.
  6. Complete 4 direction changes (2 zigzags), then ride forward on the center line and collected collected trot.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The segments being uneven — more sideways in one direction than the other.
  • The horse losing collection during the direction changes.
  • Not enough straight strides between half-pass directions, causing a choppy transition.
  • The haunches leading instead of the shoulders in the half-pass portions.

Variations & Progressions

  • Progress to half-pass zigzag at the collected canter.
  • Increase to 6 direction changes for a longer exercise.
  • Vary the width of each zigzag segment for adjustability training.
Tip: The half-pass zigzag is one of the most demanding dressage movements. Master half-pass in isolation before attempting zigzags.
