Halt-Trot Transitions
Focus: Transitions, Engagement, Obedience
Equipment: Letter markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the working trot, ride a 20-meter circle. Choose a specific point (cone or letter) for your transition.
- At your marker, transition directly to halt — no walk strides in between.
- The halt should be square and balanced. The horse should stand quietly for 3 seconds.
- From the halt, push directly into trot. Again, no walk strides.
- The trot should come forward and balanced, not rushed or running.
- Repeat 4-6 times around the circle. Each transition should be cleaner than the last.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Walk strides creeping into the transitions (either direction).
- The halt being crooked, with the horse's body angled instead of straight.
- The horse anticipating and halting before the marker.
- The trot depart from halt being explosive instead of calm and forward.
Variations & Progressions
- Progress to halt-canter transitions for a more advanced engagement exercise.
- Perform halt-trot transitions on the center line for test preparation.
- Add rein-back before the trot depart: halt, rein-back 3 steps, trot.
Tip: The quality of the halt predicts the quality of the depart. Take the time to establish a good halt before asking for trot.
