Find a gentle hill (10-15% grade). Walk your horse straight up the hill.
Keep a loose rein. The horse should use its hindquarters to push itself uphill.
At the top, walk on flat ground for 1-2 minutes to recover.
Walk down the hill at a controlled pace. The horse should step carefully, not rush.
Repeat the up-and-down 3-5 times. This is excellent cardiovascular and strength conditioning.
Hill walking builds the muscles needed for collection and impulsion in all disciplines.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Leaning forward on the uphill, which shifts weight onto the horse's forehand.
Letting the horse rush downhill, which is hard on the front legs.
Starting with hills that are too steep for the horse's current fitness level.
Not allowing recovery time between climbs.
Variations & Progressions
Progress to trotting uphill for increased conditioning.
Walk uphill and jog downhill for a varied workout.
Use hill work as a regular conditioning session 1-2 times per week.
Tip: Hill work is the single best conditioning exercise for horses. 20 minutes of hill work equals 40 minutes of flat arena work for cardiovascular benefit.
