Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Stand at your horse's left hip, facing the tail. Pick up the left hind foot as if cleaning the hoof.
  2. Gently stretch the leg backward, extending it behind the horse. Hold for 10 seconds.
  3. Bring the leg forward, stretching it underneath the horse. Hold for 10 seconds.
  4. Release the leg and let the horse place it down gently.
  5. Repeat on the right hind leg.
  6. These stretches improve range of motion in the hip and stifle joints.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Pulling the leg too far in any direction — respect the horse's range of motion.
  • Not supporting the weight of the leg, making the horse brace.
  • Stretching a cold horse — always warm up with walking first.
  • Ignoring signs of discomfort (the horse pulling its leg away, shifting weight, pinning ears).

Variations & Progressions

  • Add front leg stretches for a complete limb routine.
  • Combine with carrot stretches for a full body flexibility session.
  • Consult your vet about specific stretches for your horse's needs.
Tip: Stretching should never cause pain. If the horse pulls away, you've gone too far. Respect the current range of motion and let it improve over time.
