Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up 4 cones in a 30-foot square. This simulates a horsemanship pattern.
  2. Start at cone 1. Jog to cone 2 (straight line). At cone 2, stop.
  3. Perform a 90-degree pivot to face cone 3. Lope to cone 3.
  4. At cone 3, perform a downward transition to walk. Walk to cone 4.
  5. At cone 4, perform a 360-degree spin. Jog back to cone 1.
  6. Each movement should be precise: transitions at the cones, straight lines between them.
  7. Practice the pattern until every element is clean and accurate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Transitions happening 2-3 strides before or after the cones instead of at them.
  • Lines between cones not being straight.
  • The spin at cone 4 being sloppy or off-center.
  • Rushing between cones instead of maintaining deliberate, accurate movement.

Variations & Progressions

  • Create different patterns using the same 4 cones for variety.
  • Add a back-up element to the pattern.
  • Time the pattern and work on efficiency without sacrificing accuracy.
Tip: Horsemanship is about precision. Every step should look intentional, every transition should happen at the exact right moment.
