Inside Turn Between Two Fences at the Canter
Focus: Agility, Track Planning, Responsiveness
Equipment: 4 jump poles, 4 jump standards
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set up two fences facing the same direction, about 40 feet apart laterally.
- Jump the first fence, then ride an inside turn (toward the center of the arena) to approach the second fence.
- The inside turn saves time compared to going wide around the end of the arena.
- You must land, look immediately to the inside, half-halt, and bend the horse toward the second fence.
- Start with a wider inside turn and gradually tighten as you and your horse gain confidence.
- Practice turning to both the left and right for even development.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting the turn too late, running past the second fence.
- The turn being so tight that the horse loses balance and chips in extra strides.
- Not looking at the second fence soon enough — your eye directs the turn.
- Landing on the wrong lead, making the inside turn difficult.
Variations & Progressions
- Set up 4 fences in a box and practice inside turns between each pair.
- Alternate inside and outside turns to the same fences.
- Time yourself to see how much faster the inside turn is versus going wide.
Tip: Inside turns are all about your eye. Look at the second fence before you leave the ground over the first. Your body will follow your eyes.
