Step-by-Step Instructions
Start with the halter on. Hold the bridle in your left hand, open so the horse can see it.
Let the horse sniff the bridle. Rub the headstall along its face gently.
Offer the bit on a flat palm with a treat behind it. The horse should take the bit voluntarily.
Once the bit is in the horse's mouth, gently slide the headstall over the ears.
Adjust the bridle for fit. Stand quietly for 30 seconds.
Remove the bridle carefully: ears first, then let the horse gently spit the bit out. Never yank.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forcing the bit into the horse's mouth by prying the lips apart.
Banging the bit against the horse's teeth (common when rushing).
Pulling the headstall roughly over the ears, making the horse head-shy.
Not adjusting the bridle properly, causing discomfort that creates bridling resistance.
Variations & Progressions
Practice removing and re-bridling 3-4 times in a session until the horse stands calmly.
Warm the bit in your hands on cold days to make it more comfortable.
Teach the horse to lower its head for bridling (combine with the head-lowering exercise).
Tip: Bridling should be pleasant, not a battle. A horse that opens its mouth for the bit and lowers its head for the headstall is a joy to ride every day.
