Introduction to Counter-Canter
Focus: Balance, Straightness, Collection
Equipment: 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Establish a balanced right-lead canter on the track.
- As you approach the short side, instead of changing leads, continue on the right lead through the turn.
- On the short side, you are now in counter-canter. Maintain a very slight right flexion (toward the lead).
- Ride one short side in counter-canter, then return to true canter on the long side.
- If the horse swaps leads, come back to trot, establish the correct lead, and try again.
- Gradually extend the counter-canter distance: one short side, then one full end of the arena, then the entire arena.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse swapping leads because it assumes it should change.
- Over-bending the neck toward the lead, destabilizing the balance.
- The canter becoming four-beat from tension and loss of impulsion.
- The rider gripping and becoming stiff, which transfers tension to the horse.
Variations & Progressions
- Ride a shallow loop on the long side in counter-canter (come 3-5 meters off the rail and back).
- Counter-canter on a 20-meter circle for advanced balance.
- Use counter-canter as preparation for flying changes — it teaches the horse to wait for your aid.
Tip: Counter-canter should feel like normal canter with a slight lean. If it feels like a struggle, the horse needs more basic canter balance first.
