Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Attach long lines to the bit rings, running through the surcingle rings at the horse's sides.
  2. Stand about 10 feet behind the horse. Hold one line in each hand like reins.
  3. Ask the horse to walk forward with a cluck. Guide direction with the lines just as you would with reins from the saddle.
  4. Practice walking straight lines along the arena rail. The horse should respond to your line aids for turns.
  5. To turn left, increase contact on the left line while softening the right. Use your voice to maintain forward motion.
  6. Practice halts using both lines and your voice. The horse should stop promptly.
  7. Start with 15-20 minutes maximum. Long-lining is mentally demanding for both horse and handler.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Standing directly behind the horse (dangerous if it kicks). Stay slightly to one side.
  • The lines getting tangled around the horse's legs. Always keep them off the ground.
  • Pulling too hard on the lines, causing the horse to over-bend or resist.
  • Not having a helper present for the first few sessions in case the lines cause confusion.

Variations & Progressions

  • Practice circles and figure-eights on long lines.
  • Add trot work on long lines once the walk is established.
  • Long-line over ground poles for coordination and body awareness.
Tip: Long-lining gives you the control of riding without the weight on the horse's back. It's invaluable for young horses and rehabilitation.
