Jumping Position at the Collected Trot and Canter
Focus: Technique, Balance, Fitness
Equipment: None required
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the collected trot, rise into two-point position: your seat lifts slightly off the saddle, weight drops into your heels.
- Hold the two-point position for 10 strides, then sit for 10 strides. Alternate.
- Your hands should stay steady over the horse's withers. Don't brace on the neck.
- Progress to the collected trot in two-point. This is harder because of the rocking motion.
- Hold two-point at the collected trot for 10 strides, then sit. Build up to 20, then 30 strides.
- This develops the leg strength and balance needed for jumping.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Gripping with the knees instead of keeping weight in the heels.
- Resting hands on the horse's neck for balance instead of being self-supporting.
- Collapsing the upper body forward instead of maintaining a flat back with eyes up.
- Holding breath — keep breathing normally throughout.
Variations & Progressions
- Hold two-point for an entire trot circle (30+ strides) for endurance.
- Practice two-point while trotting over ground poles.
- Add arm exercises in two-point: arms out to the side, arms forward, hands on helmet.
Tip: Two-point is the foundation of jumping position. If you can't hold it for 30 seconds at the canter, you're not ready for courses.
