Lead Change on the Diagonal at the Trot
Focus: Lead Changes, Balance, Timing
Equipment: 4 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Trot on the right lead along the long side of the arena.
- Turn across the diagonal, maintaining the right lead.
- At the center of the diagonal, ask for a flying lead change to the left lead.
- The change should happen in one stride: both front and hind legs switch simultaneously.
- Continue loping on the left lead to the new track.
- If the horse doesn't change cleanly, come back to the trot and try again.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Asking for the change too early or too late on the diagonal.
- The horse changing only in front (late behind), creating a disunited canter.
- Using dramatic body aids that throw the horse off balance.
- Practicing too many changes in one session, causing the horse to become tense.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice on a figure-eight for repeated changes in both directions.
- Work toward automatic changes where the horse changes at the center without strong aids.
- Use diagonal changes as preparation for lead changes within reining patterns.
Tip: A clean flying change looks effortless. If it looks dramatic, the preparation was insufficient. Go back to simple changes.
