Leg Yield from Center Line to Wall at the Walk
Focus: Lateral Work, Responsiveness, Balance
Equipment: 2 cones or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start at A on the center line at the working walk.
- Ride straight for 3-4 strides to establish rhythm and straightness on the center line.
- Apply your left leg at the girth to leg yield to the right, moving the horse sideways toward the right wall.
- Keep a slight left flexion (away from the direction of sideways travel). The horse's body should be nearly straight.
- Maintain the forward tempo. The horse should reach the rail by the time you arrive at B or E.
- Walk, change direction, and repeat from the center line to the other wall.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting the leg yield before establishing straightness on the center line.
- Too much neck bend, causing the shoulder to lead excessively.
- The horse not reaching the wall, indicating insufficient lateral response to the leg aid.
- Losing forward impulsion so the horse shuffles sideways without marching forward.
Variations & Progressions
- Vary where you start the leg yield: start at C for a longer lateral distance.
- Add a circle at B or E before completing the leg yield to the wall.
- Increase speed to medium trot while maintaining the leg yield angle.
Tip: Start with just a few sideways steps and build up. Three good steps sideways are better than ten crooked ones.
