Lope Departure from the Trot

Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the trot, prepare for a trot departure. Sit deep and collect the trot slightly.
- Apply your outside leg behind the girth, inside leg at the girth, and cluck.
- The horse should step directly into the trot without trotging first.
- Trot for half the arena, then transition back to trot (no trot in between).
- Practice 4-6 departures on each lead. Each one should get cleaner.
- For western classes, the trot departure should be smooth and quiet, not explosive.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The horse jogging before the lope, indicating unclear aids or insufficient collection.
- Picking up the wrong lead because the outside leg position wasn't clear.
- The departure being too abrupt or fast for western pleasure standards.
- Not sitting deep enough during the departure, encouraging the horse to rush.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice lope departures at specific cones for precision.
- Add halt-lope transitions for more advanced responsiveness.
- Work on lope departures on a circle for consistent leads.
Tip: A western lope departure should be invisible to spectators. If you can't tell when the horse changed gaits, it's a good departure.
