Lowering the Head on Cue
Focus: Relaxation, Communication, Flexibility
Equipment: Halter and leadrope
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Stand facing your horse's head. Place your hand on the poll (the top of the head between the ears).
- Apply gentle, steady downward pressure. Wait. Do not increase pressure.
- The moment the horse lowers its head even slightly, remove your hand immediately. Praise.
- Repeat. Each time, the horse should lower its head further and faster.
- Build to the point where a touch on the poll results in the horse lowering its head to chest height.
- This exercise is useful for bridling, clipping, and general relaxation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying too much pressure, causing the horse to brace upward against your hand.
- Not releasing fast enough when the horse gives. Timing is everything.
- Expecting the head to go all the way down on the first attempt. Reward small improvements.
- Only practicing from one side.
Variations & Progressions
- Teach the head-lower from a verbal cue ('head down') without the touch.
- Use head-lowering as a calming technique in stressful situations.
- Combine with bridling practice: lower head, bridle, praise.
Tip: A horse with a low head is a relaxed horse. Teaching head-lowering gives you a tool to de-escalate tension in any situation.
