Step-by-Step Instructions
Attach side reins to the surcingle or saddle and the bit rings. Start with the side reins loose (not adjusted to contact).
Send the horse out at the sitting sitting trot. Let it find its own rhythm with the loose side reins.
After 5 minutes of warm-up, shorten the side reins one hole so there is light contact when the horse carries its head naturally.
The horse should seek the contact forward and down, not curl behind it.
Sitting Trot for 5-7 minutes in each direction with the side reins adjusted. Watch for a swinging back and relaxed topline.
After the working portion, lengthen the side reins for a cool-down sitting sitting trot.
Always remove side reins before sitting trot work unless they are set very long.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Side reins adjusted too short, causing the horse to curl behind the bit or become tense.
Not warming up without side reins first, asking the horse to work in a frame cold.
Leaving side reins on during canter, which can restrict the horse's neck movement and cause tripping.
Both side reins being different lengths without intentional purpose.
Variations & Progressions
Use elastic side reins for a softer contact that allows more give.
Adjust side reins progressively shorter as the horse warms up and builds strength.
Combine with ground poles for a complete lunging workout.
Tip: Side reins should encourage the horse to seek contact, not force a head position. If the horse is behind the vertical, the side reins are too short.
