Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Begin lunging at the canter on a 20-meter circle.
  2. After 1 minute, ask for an upward transition to canter using voice and whip position.
  3. Canter for 1 minute, then ask for a downward transition back to canter.
  4. Alternate canter and canter every minute for 5 minutes on each rein.
  5. Focus on prompt transitions: the horse should respond within 2-3 strides of your command.
  6. If the horse ignores your command, back it up with a louder voice or a pointed whip.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The horse ignoring transition commands because the handler's aids are unclear.
  • Pulling on the lunge line to slow down instead of using voice and body language.
  • Transitions taking 10+ strides to complete.
  • Not praising prompt transitions, so the horse has no incentive to respond quickly.

Variations & Progressions

  • Add canter transitions for three-gait lunging.
  • Ask for halt from trot for a more demanding downward transition.
  • Vary the timing: 30 seconds of trot, 2 minutes of walk, 45 seconds of trot, etc.
Tip: Lunging transitions should mirror ridden transitions in quality. If your horse won't transition promptly on the lunge, it won't under saddle.
